Immunotherapy: predicting patient benefit
Professor Kuball is helping to develop a new type of immunotherapy- where the body’s own immune system is used to fight cancer. Immunotherapy is a promising new type of treatment which is currently being developed and tested in many different ways. Scientists at Professor Kuball’s institute in the Netherlands have developed a prototype form of immunotherapy using specially engineered immune cells, and they hope to start testing this in patients soon. But they still need to find out which patients are most likely to benefit from this type of therapy. Professor Kuball and his team will use his latest Worldwide Cancer Research grant to investigate this further. His aim is to make sure the engineered immune cells are able to recognise and attack cancer cells as effectively as possible. His team will study a cell molecule which they have identified to see if it can help the immune cells do this. They will investigate in the lab how this molecule might help the immune cells target different types of cancer cells, and if it can potentially be used as a molecular marker indicating which patients will benefit from this treatment the most.

Our Impact

See the difference our research projects make.

Our philosophy is very simple: if we believe a project can make a difference in the fight against cancer then we will award a grant to make it happen. We’re not interested in national borders or any kind of geographical bias, just the most promising proposals. And that’s the very reason we ask t...
