Irene and her family
"We're truly grateful for the years we've been able to enjoy with our wonderful mum, all thanks to research into new cancer cures." - Sue, Irene's daughter

Diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram in 1990, aged 53, Irene's treatment enabled her to go on to make a full recovery and have the joy of seeing her 11 grandchildren grow up - as well as her 12 great-grandchildren!

With 1 in 2 people now being diagnosed in their lifetime, cancer affects us all. Current predictions indicate that cancer deaths worldwide will almost double by 2050. But there is hope. By choosing to leave a gift in your Will to Worldwide Cancer Research, you could be the catalyst that brings us closer to the cures of tomorrow.

Your gift can be the reason that more families like Irene's have more precious time together.

Your gift in Will FAQs:

Here are some frequently asked questions about leaving a gift in your Will. Please do contact us if you have any other queries, we would love to hear from you.

Why do I need a Will?

Having an up-to-date Will is the only way to ensure that your affairs are in order and the people and causes you care about are looked after when you are gone. Wills are so important that most people prefer to have a solicitor involved to ensure their Will is legal and valid.

What information do I need to leave a gift?

To leave a gift in your Will to Worldwide Cancer Research, all you need to provide your solicitor or Will writer with is our contact details and registered charity number:

Name: Worldwide Cancer Research

Address: Third Floor South, 121 George Street, Edinburgh EH2 4YN

Registered charity number: SC022918

Can Worldwide Cancer Research help me to write or update my Will?

We work with two partners who offer a free Will writing and review service online or in-person These services allow you to easily write or update a simple Will – and it won’t cost you a penny. You do not have to include a gift to Worldwide Cancer Research, but of course we’d be extremely grateful if you did.

For more complex Wills, your solicitor will discuss any additional costs beforehand.

I’ve already written my Will. Can I amend it to leave Worldwide Cancer Research a gift?

Personal situations change, and you can ask your solicitor or professional Will writer to make amendments to your Will at any time. Depending on the extent of the changes you want to make to your existing Will, it might be possible to use a simple document called a codicil to make your amendments. Please remember to include our full name and charity number Worldwide Cancer Research Registered charity number: SC022918

What type of gift should I leave?

Thank you so much for considering leaving a gift in your Will. It is of course totally up to you what sort of gift to leave. The three main types are:

  • Percentage share – known as a ‘residuary’ gift, as it is a percentage of the ‘residue’ of your estate once other gifts have been made. This type of gift is the most valuable because it’s inflation-proof, and even a small percentage can make a bid impact.
  • Lump sum – known as a ‘pecuniary’ gift – is a fixed amount of money. This can potentially lose its value over time as costs increase.
  • Specific gift - a particular item, such as a car, jewellery or property.

There are other ways of leaving a gift. We recommend you speak to your solicitor about the any alternatives.

Do I need to let you know if I have left a gift to Worldwide Cancer Research?

We completely understand that a Will is a personal matter, and you may not wish to let us know if you have chosen to leave a gift. However we’d love to be able to thank you properly for your kindness and generosity, and keep you updated with relevant news and events. So if you’d like, please do email [email protected]  or give us a call on 0300 777 7910. Thank you!

Does leaving a gift to charity affect inheritance tax?

In most cases, your gift to a charity like Worldwide Cancer Research will be exempt from inheritance tax, so it can help to reduce the tax burden on your friends or family.

Your solicitor will explain how to make your Will as tax efficient as possible. They can also outline the rules that reduce the rate of inheritance tax for people who leave at least 10% of their estate to charity.

I am the executor of a Will. Who can I contact about the administration of an estate?

If you are the executor or solicitor acting in connection with the administration of an estate where Worldwide Cancer Research has been left a gift, and you would like to contact us or make a payment, please email  [email protected]  or call our friendly team on 0300 777 7910.
