A bold new era

An exciting new chapter for Worldwide Cancer Research

The day we took our first steps into a new chapter for the charity – everything you need to know

2nd December 2019

From a meeting between the world’s brightest minds in cancer research, to the launch of our First Step campaign – here’s a rundown on everything that happened.

At Worldwide Cancer Research, we exist to solve one problem – we haven’t found the cures to cancer yet. When thinking about this and all that we’ve achieved in the last 40 years, we realised that we needed a bold new look to reflect our mission to find and fund pioneering research around the world. We hope you love it as much as we do!

Thursday 14th November was a big day for us. Not only did we unveil our new look, including a new website, but we also launched our brand-new campaign - #TheFirstStep. Why? Because when it comes to finding lifesaving cancer cures, the first step is the most important.

The campaign involved installing a series of iconic ‘first steps’ around Edinburgh and Glasgow, to illustrate our focus on funding early stage, discovery research – #TheFirstStep on the journey to finding new treatments and cures for cancer. Because before the clinical trials and life-extending drugs, there are bright new ideas that desperately need backing.

Members of #TeamWorldwide set off to these iconic steps to tell passers-by all about the charity and the campaign and handed out some great merchandise!

The locations included: Waverley Steps, Omni Centre, Dynamic Earth, Waterloo Apex Hotel in Edinburgh; and The Lighthouse, Intu Braehead, Apex Hotel Glasgow and Central Station in Glasgow.

While half of #TeamWorldwide headed to the steps, the other half headed to the Apex Hotel on Waterloo Place to attend our annual ‘Bold Ideas Gathering’. This is the biggest event in Worldwide Cancer Research’s annual diary. The world’s top cancer researchers – our Scientific Advisory Committee - arrived in Edinburgh to discuss and debate how best to invest the money raised through fundraising and generous public donations.

We decided to coincide the launch of the campaign with the ‘Bold Ideas Gathering’ because it highlights the need to take that #FirstStep and fund the brightest ideas in cancer research in order to find new and improved ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. It’s incredibly exciting to think that a research project we decide to fund at this meeting could be the first step that unlocks a new drug or treatment.

We know that bold research will cure cancer, but we can’t do it alone. That’s why #TheFirstStep locations will be around for a few more weeks to raise more awareness and crucial donations so that we can continue to fund bold, discovery research.

The most exciting part of all of this? It’s only the beginning! ‘Launch Day’ was the literal launch-pad for all that’s yet to come. So – follow #TheFirstStep and our journey to kick-start cancer cures across the world to see what’s next.
